Prevention Programs & Initiatives
Alcohol & Drugs Initiative
Assistant District Attorneys aggressively prosecute alcohol and drug-related crimes, including the distribution of drugs in a school zone and operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Prosecutors also handle a variety of crimes relating to the devastating second-hand effects of illegal drugs and alcohol abuse, including date rape, property destruction, robbery, motor vehicle homicide and murder.
District Attorney Marian Ryan recognizes that alcohol and drug abuse is a public health problem. The District Attorney and members of her staff meet frequently with students, teachers and school administrators, particularly during prom and graduation season, to discuss healthy and safe choices around drugs and alcohol. In addition, the office, along with Middlesex Partnerships for Youth, Inc., sponsors a host of community-based events, forums and panels to address substance abuse, the tragic consequences and preventative measures.
Our office has also joined with law enforcement, medical professionals and schools to address the issue of prescription medication abuse, which has reached epidemic proportions in many of our communities. As part of this effort, we have have funded prescription collection boxes for 36 police departments in Middlesex County, where residents can safely discard unwanted prescription medications.ShareThis
