District Attorney Marian Ryan joined Chief Thomas Pasquarello and Deputy Chief Michael Cabral for Somerville’s National Night Out, an event sponsored by the Mayor’s Office and the City of Somerville’s Office of Prevention to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.

District Attorney Ryan spoke about the importance of summer safety and the need for a community approach to safety. With the new school year right around the corner, District Attorney Ryan announced details about the MDAO’s back to school safety initiative to keep children safe before, during and after school.  District Attorney Ryan stressed how important it is to talk to children about being safe while walking to and from school and at the bus stops, as well being aware of strangers not just when walking to school, but online as well.

The National Night Out event, held at Foss Park in Somerville, also included a bike safety demonstration from the Somerville Police Department and a presentation by the State Police K-9 Unit.

National Night Out was founded by the National Association of Town Watch in 1984 and now involves more than 37 million people and 15,000 communities from all 50 states, US territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide.
